Jesse lifted an eyebrow. "Okay?"

Martha gave her best sheepish smile. "Yeah, I just had a bit of an accident last night. Ran into an iron railing."

"Ouch," he winced and thought, I doubt it. Martha wasn't exactly what he would call clumsy.
He debated mentioning his dissatisfaction with work, and decided against it. "At least you had a more eventful evening than I did."

Martha's lips quirked. "If you call injuring yourself in the stupidest way possible 'eventful', I suppose. Why, how did you spend your evening?"

Jesse laughed. "Read the paper for a while, had a glass of wine and went to bed. My life has been painfully dull lately. The pains of being a hardworking bachelor." He smiled. Though not working at all at the moment... "I think I might take a walk tonight though, see the town, get some fresh air. The weather has been delightful these last couple days."

Martha couldn't control the little frown that crossed her face, but she covered it quickly. "It certainly has," she said carefully, hoping Weber hadn't noticed the expression. If he smelled a story, he'd be trouble. There was nothing more dangerous to their secrecy than an unsatisfied reporter.

Jesse knew the conversation was about over. Back to work. "Tell me something, do find your assignments fairly uninteresting recently, or is it just me?" Hopefully she wouldn't shout at him and tell him to get back to work.

(She's just the secretary person, FYI.)

Martha nearly burst out laughing. "You do remember I'm not actually a reporter, right?" She paused, knowing she'd regret the words before she even spoke them. "Look, about that walk you're planning on taking tonight--" She bit her lip, conflicted. On the one hand, she knew Weber was bored and itching for a story, which was dangerous to her other job, but on the other, conscience dictated that she at least try to warn him. She really hated dilemmas. She'd much rather beat something up.

"Yeah I know," he grinned. Truthfully, he wanted to extend the conversation as long as he could to buy time. When she mentioned the walk he blinked. "Yes?"

She hesitated before replying, "Well, you know... there've been... rumors. About people going missing at night." Oh, she was going to hate herself later. This was a bad idea.
