AWESOME. Let's do some worldbuilding! I really like the idea of zombie hunters, but I have a few questions. Are the hunters affiliated with the detectives who are trying to bring down the mob boss using the zombies? Or are the detectives the same as the hunters? Second, where do the zombies come from, and what kind of zombies are we talking here? Are we thinking along the lines of old Frankenstein movie monsters, like experiment gone wrong? What do they look like? Are they the flesh-eating variety or do they just kill people? Are they actually dead people, and if so, do they look like their former selves, or are they nasty and decomposed? Do they remember anything of their former life, even if it's just an echo? If they're people, are they even actually dead, or just being mind-controlled or transformed in some way? If they're not actually people, again, where do they come from? Is there some sort of magic involved? Personally, I like the idea of an urban fantasy, with zombies, set in the '20s, but then I'm a sucker for urban fantasy. If it is urban fantasy, maybe the magical community stuff has all been underground until just recently, what with the zombies attacking people? And if it is urban fantasy, are zombies the only supernatural thing, or is there more? Is it set in the real world or an alternate reality? Also, how do the bad guys control the zombies? Technologically, psychically, some other way? I'd kind of like it if there's some horrific process wherein the zombie is still the same person, with all the same inner loyalties, but completely under the bosses' control with no chance for escape or any kind of return to normal life. But then, I'm mean. I'm not opposed to mindless, decomposing killer corpses, I just think the other kind is more interesting. Oh, also, about the zombie hunters--do they predate the zombies' initial attacks, like are they sort of supernatural guardians or wardens who are supposed to keep things like this under control, or are they like a special taskforce formed in response? I kind of like the idea of them being part of the police, just because that would be sort of surreal and interesting.

...I think once we've answered some of these questions we'll have a good place to start, yeah?

Those questions are all good ones...

I'm going to agree with the not decomposing type of zombies, because it'll be much more interesting if they can blend in with normal people and such. :)

I had been under the opinion that this detective was not affiliated with the zombie hunters (but maybe he could become that way in the story? don't know).

My brain's kind of broken right now... when I have more time and brain power (aka the weekend) I'll try and offer more imput if you guys don't have stuff worked out. I'm pretty much open to whatever.

Hmm... I'll post some possible worldbuilding tomorrow. After I've slept and gotten my brain back.

Edit:

Ok... here are some of my thoughts, though we don't have to use any of them.

Zombie hunters- I think it would be interesting if the detectives were separate from the actual zombie hunters. Maybe provide more character interaction, such as the detectives joining forces with the hunters.

Zombies- I'm not sure of an origin (I personally like supernatural creatures with an obscure or unknown origin), but I think if the story's set in the 1920's with the zombies formerly being known but now in legends then a mad scientist experiment gone wrong might not fit (but, then again, we could do the culture like the 1920's with a few more modern aspects like maybe cellphones or something like that. I'd totally be up for an alternate reality or something different- like in a recent novel I had some aspects of late 19th century culture but kept a lot of modern culture in the same world).

I agree with Sulare about the zombies blending in with normal people. It'll make them harder to catch.

And I personally favor them just killing people, though they would have to do it in a certain way to make people suspicious of what is going on. Not quite sure what that would be.

I wouldn't mind any other supernatural beings in the world maybe hiding out for centuries but recently re-surfacing. I suggested earlier maybe the zombies are controlled by a vampire mob boss, but we don't have to use the usual vampires or werewolves. The control could either be a brainwashing spell that forces them to obey, or it could be that either the boss promised them something or he somehow threatened them to obey him.

Maybe the zombie hunters could be a secret part of the police or something that was formed centuries ago to make sure the zombies stayed hidden. But lately they're coming out, so the hunters are growing in numbers and are becoming more known. Or, if we decide to go with other supernatural creatures too, maybe the hunters are also responsible for keeping the other supernatural beings in control too.

I apologize if none of it makes sense; my brain is still tired.

...would it be terribly anachronistic to have a female hunter? I just, I can't resist having a sassy kickbutt female character. It's a compulsion.

Since I really doubt "zombie hunters" consitutes a normal part of society, I don't see why you can't.

And I am attempting to write a male zombie hunter... hopefully I can do it today. School was eating me today.

Name: William Avery
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Job: Zombie hunter
Appearance: William is not a particularly spectacular looking man at first glance. He stands a bit over average height at six feet tall with an average build, dark brown eyes and medium brown hair cut in the normal style—slightly longer on the top than the sides and the back—though only sometimes does he actually remember to comb it. His dress is fairly typical; dress shirt and pants (with or without a tie, depending on the day), vest, long trench coat, fedora. His clothes are always neutral colours to keep from drawing unnecessary attention to himself. Inside his coat, he always keeps a revolver, and several other weapons most time; just in case. He has gathered himself a fair number of scars since he has began zombie hunting, though only a couple on his hands are visible while he is dressed.

Personality: A man of many faces and contradictions is William, though much of the world is completely unaware of it. Mostly, they seem him as a smiling young man who’s always happy, who just hasn’t figured out what exactly he wants to do in life, and hasn’t found a girl to settle down with. This is his face of the day. His face of the night is much different. He stalks through the dark and empty streets, frequenting speakeasies, heedless of the laws that prevent the sale of alcohol. Because he is a man on a mission, a man searching for an answer, and a man searching for revenge, but never to be fully satisfied.

Background: Seven years ago, when he was eighteen years old, William’s family was killed by zombies, alerting him to their existence. His father was a business man, and one evening he arrived back home to find the human figures with listless eyes in the house, and his mother, father, and younger sisters all dead. Thus began his zombie hunting. It was perhaps two years after he began his solo crusade that he became aware of the other zombie hunters. He trained with them briefly, but for the most part he works alone, though he always keeps track of which of them are in town, and will occasionally team up with them.

Other: Nothing right now.

I just an idea about zombies, inspired by your char profile, Sul. What if zombies don't really kill people; they just steal some part of them that practically makes them dead? Like putting them into a coma-like state where they look awake but are totally out of it? And they can't get back out of it.

It's just an idea, and I don't know if it makes a lick of sense >.<
