I am sick of people misspelling names just to make their characters seem more special. :P If there is a GOOD reason to spell Victoria "Viquetoiria" like the language, or some family heritage or something than FINE. The same thing goes for changing the i's in a name to y's.

Don't go mangling names please. :P

Lol...*has sometimes changed the i's to y's* :P (I like the way it looks, okay?) *ahem*

I can't really think of any right now, but I'm sure if you give me time I can come up with some.

Actually...grammatical errors. "It's" means "it is" and is not the possessive of "it." Same with getting "they're," "their," and "there" mixed up.

Oh! I also hate it when people use the word "ok" in fantasy novels.

Thomas Jefferson made up that word. It wouldn't exist in a fantasy world. :P

Well, unless it was urban fantasy or a worldhopping story. :P But I get what you're saying. This isn't literary, but I also hate it when they use "okay" in tv shows like Merlin. I love Merlin, but that bugs me.

As for actual literary pet peeves, it really annoys me when writers make all the dialogue grammatically correct, particularly when it's not in-character. Don't get me wrong, good grammar belongs in the narrative. But come on, nobody speaks with absolutely perfect grammar, or at least nobody that doesn't sound like a snob.

A word is not the same with one writer as with another. One tears it from his guts. The other pulls it out of his overcoat pocket.

I'll point out, your fantasy people probably aren't talking in English, either. It's clearly translated into English. :P

And, depending on whether you count fragments or not, I think you can talk with perfect/near perfect grammar without sounding like a snob. But I suppose I could be wrong, there.

Literary pet peeves...I don't know, actually. I'm sure I have them, but I can't think of any. Unless...does introducing something as a plot device and then forgetting about its existence the rest of the book count?

Well, I'm not sure about you, Hermit, but I have quite a few "hick" characters in one of my stories.

People who say such things as "You ain't got none." :)

Lol, the thing is, in my family we use excellent grammar. Since we do use fragments, it may not be technically perfect grammar, but I do hope that I don't sound like a snob most of the time. :P (Heh. I don't have characters with bad grammar usually. I should probably branch out one of these days and try it. XD)

And I thought I would try to come up with another pet peeve so this wouldn't be spamming, but I couldn't. Sorry. :P

Well, I do agree that having everyone always talk with perfect grammar is a bad idea unless you have a good reason (if everyone is a noble, or something like that, they might all have excellent grammar). I'm sure I should have more bad grammar in my stories. But I think I don't know very many people who use bad grammar much, or if I do, I don't really think about it, so I don't naturally have very bad grammar from my characters.

Does that even make any sense? It looks pretty confusing to me...

I don't know, perfect grammar doesn't bother me nearly so much as when people try to use dialects for their characters and are totally inconsistent with it and generally just fail miserably. Not saying your hick characters do that, Meg, but...I've seen some pretty bad.
