I enjoy the books though, granted, they're certainly not Lord of the Rings. I like the fact that it was blatantly written as a Christian series (hence why I actually cried in "All My Holy Mountain"). The writing's not perfect and the characters may be a bit flat, but this is LB's first series and writing takes time to perfect.

Well, I promised myself I wouldn't get into a debate, so I'll just slink away. That's my $0.02.

eh... i liked them when i read them but by the time book three came out i kinda had changed my mind. they're flat, boring and the characters are as interesting as a rocks.

No offense to LB cause I'm sure he loves his books to pieces, but they really aren't well written. I think the focus audience were meant to be preteens... (like myself when i read them) who wasn't experienced enough to see the ample faults in them.

Personally I lov the subtly of Christianity in Tolkien's books, it made it far easier to place yourself in his world while reading rather then in these books where every five seconds I was being jerked back out with 'LOOK CHRISTIANITY' it tended to be like a slap in the face *shrug* my two cents... like i said they were pretty good when i was younger

The only part I didnt like about the books was that they were just alittle melodramatic. Other than that I love them. I could have stood for alittle more humor, but I guess that when youre world is about to be runover with devilish beings like the Malakeim (and more importantly Malek) you dont think much in the way of jokes.

This is what I get for not visiting this section of the forums in months.

Hi, I'm var, I joined the forums solely so I could bash the books, back when I was a wee little angry thing with too much free time. As opposed to an old angry fogie with too little free time. One of my first threads was actually an extended essay on why I thought the books were awful.

I remain as living proof that it is extremely difficult to get banned. XD

i think that the plot of the stories was good, and could have made an incredible book. (especially if they would focus more on the Vulsutyrim and Cinjan. they were great!)

however, i think it basically got ruined by the writing style. the good characters were too perfect, the bad characters were too bad, and no one was really 3D. I also really hated all the love/mush/gush scenes. it seems like every time Aljy, and Aelwyn, and Pedraal and Karalin got together there was a bunch of compliments, and wet sloppy kisses, and hugs and 'how will i live without you's.

that said, i loved the books when i was nine. because i hadn't matured enough to notice writing flaws, and thus could enjoy a story despite the problems in execution.
