Remember that there really is NOTHING completely new. LOTR and Narnia are both based on Greek Mythology and other sources. All the fantasy stories I've seen draw from similar sources and ideas.
If a book could be completely new, I think it might be too confusing if there was nothing familiar in it.
They also do provide some uplifting getaways in the middle of a rather dark series of scenes. Most famous example of the same thing was done by shakespeare himself in Macbeth. A drunk guy of no significance has a full page monologue of no significance to anything. but the whole scene is right after Macbeth Kills Duncan, so it is a nice mood lifter.
